Originally from Peru, Joel grew up in Ridgewood, Queens. He is a social media nerd, long-distance runner, and an “artivist.” Growing up as an undocumented citizen in NYC encouraged Joel to be a strong advocate for DACA and the undocumented people of the nation. Joel has worked in the community-based field for six years and has contributed to efforts to further the mission of Make the Road NY, Queens Community House, and The Door. He has also consulted with various start-ups to help them craft a social media identity. In his spare time, Joel enjoys running and has crisscrossed all major parks in the five boroughs. Joel has also worked with various activist organizations to create banners, posters, and social media content that elevates the voices of youth.
