Bright Spot - PS/MS 279

At PS/MS 279 After School, Luz is one of the students who loves to write. She comes in every class with stories based on books she is reading, stories she has crafted in her imagination, and more. She has a knack for communicating her thoughts from the perspective of fictional characters, but doesn’t often write about herself, which much of the residency has focused on (memoir/autobiographical writing). She took the opportunity to use metaphor and anaphora to write this beautifully lyrical poem that has a lot of deep meaning that isn’t necessarily apparent, as it doesn’t show up literally on the page. It was great to see Luz push herself into a new realm!

Because

Because the feeling of being chained to this prison
Because people care about each other if I stay here
Because they’re making me do work
making my hand hurt
Because I go to my humble of the warm
cozy place I know

Because I still have the paper of
confusion
